CEO Transition at Stack Overflow
Stack Overflow's founder Joel Spolsky has officially stepped down as CEO, handing the reins to Prashanth Chandrasekar. Spolsky will remain as chairman but is taking a sabbatical to focus on other ventures.

In an exclusive update, Spolsky revealed he is 'really enjoying discovering just how little I knew about running medium-sized companies, as I watch Prashanth rearrange everything—for the better.' He added, 'It's really satisfying to realize that the best possible outcome for me is if he proves what a bad CEO I was by doing a much better job running the company.'
Chandrasekar has been settling in over the past few months, with Spolsky still joining customer calls and weekly meetings, but now with significantly freed-up time.
Glitch: The New Fog Creek
Spolsky's first company, Fog Creek Software, has been rebranded as Glitch, described as 'the friendly community for building the web.' Under CEO Anil Dash, Glitch has grown to millions of apps and recently raised substantial funding.
Spolsky emphasized that 'in every era there has to be some kind of simplified programming environment for the quiet majority of developers who don't need fancy administration features.' Glitch targets those who just want to write code and run it.
HASH: A Stealth Simulation Platform
Another company under Spolsky's chairmanship is HASH, which has been under the radar until now. The company just put up details on its website, revealing an open-source platform for simulations.
HASH allows users to model problems where individual agent behaviors are known but aggregate outcomes are unpredictable. For example, city planners can simulate traffic to optimize bus routes by modeling each commuter's decision-making.

'This kind of modeling is incredibly computationally intensive, but it works even when you don't have a closed-form formula for how bus lines impact traffic,' Spolsky noted. HASH enables testing millions of potential routes.
Background
Joel Spolsky co-founded Stack Overflow in 2008, one of the most popular Q&A sites for programmers. He also founded Fog Creek Software, which later became Glitch, and has been an influential figure in software development.
Spolsky lives in Manhattan's 'Naturally Occurring Retirement Community' (NORC), but insists this is a sabbatical, not retirement. 'I'm really, really busy,' he stated, aiming to deflect questions about his current activities.
What This Means
The leadership change at Stack Overflow signals a new era for the company, with Chandrasekar bringing fresh perspective. Spolsky's shift to chairman allows him to guide strategy while exploring new ventures.
Glitch's growth suggests continued demand for simplified development environments, while HASH's simulation platform could revolutionize modeling in fields like urban planning. Spolsky remains deeply engaged in tech innovation, proving that stepping back from day-to-day operations doesn't mean stepping away from industry impact.
