Welcome to the latest edition of Safari Technology Preview. Version 241 brings a host of improvements across accessibility, animations, and CSS, now available for download on macOS Tahoe and Sequoia. Existing users can update via System Settings under General → Software Update. This release refines core web standards support, fixing numerous bugs and introducing new features. Here are ten critical updates you need to know.
1. Accessibility Enhancements
This release resolves several key accessibility issues. Speech synthesis now correctly handles speechSynthesis.cancel() without removing utterances queued by subsequent speechSynthesis.speak() calls. MathML table rows and cells now compute bounding boxes accurately, improving screen reader support. Comboboxes now forward focus to their aria-activedescendant, allowing assistive technologies to interact with list items seamlessly. Additionally, aria-owns is now respected when computing accessible names from element content, ensuring richer semantic descriptions.

2. Animation Fix for Viewport Units
An issue where animation-fill-mode did not correctly apply viewport-based units after resizing the viewport has been fixed. This ensures that animations using vw, vh, and similar units behave consistently across different window sizes, providing smoother and more predictable visual transitions.
3. New CSS Box Sizing stretch Keyword
Safari now supports the stretch keyword in box sizing properties. This allows elements to fill available space more intuitively, similar to width: 100% but with better integration into the CSS sizing model. Developers can apply box-sizing: stretch to achieve responsive layouts with less effort.
4. CSS Scroll Anchoring Becomes Stable
CSS scroll anchoring, which prevents annoying page jumps when content loads above the viewport, is now stable in Safari. This feature has been in development for a while, and its solid implementation here enhances user experience by keeping scroll positions steady during dynamic content updates.
5. Improved Line Separator Rendering
The U+2028 LINE SEPARATOR character is now rendered as a forced line break per the CSS specification. Previously, this character was not treated as a line break, causing formatting inconsistencies. This fix aligns Safari's behavior with other modern browsers and the spec.
6. Outline Offset Inflation Corrected
An issue where outline-offset was inflated for outline: auto on macOS has been fixed. Now, the offset behaves as intended, providing precise control over focus indicators and decorative outlines without unexpected scaling.
7. Font Family Serialization Preserved
Font family names that match CSS-wide keywords or generic families (like serif) are now serialized with quotes intact. This prevents parsing errors when such names appear in font stacks, ensuring more reliable font loading and styling.
8. Unicode-Range Font Download Optimization
Fonts are no longer downloaded for characters outside their defined unicode-range. This fix reduces unnecessary network requests and improves performance, especially on pages using large font families with limited character coverage.
9. Flexbox Percentage-Height Image Shrink Fix
A flex item containing an image with a percentage height now shrinks correctly around that image. Previously, the flex container failed to adjust its size appropriately, leading to layout overflow. This fix ensures accurate sizing in flex layouts with percentage-based heights.
10. View Transition Color Space Correction
View Transition snapshots were incorrectly stored in sRGB, causing rendering issues with non-sRGB colors. This update ensures snapshots retain the correct color space, preserving vibrant colors like Display P3 during page transitions.
Conclusion
These ten updates showcase Safari's ongoing commitment to web standards and user experience. Developers and users alike will benefit from enhanced accessibility, smoother animations, and more robust CSS handling.
